Is Your Check Engine Light On?

All newer cars and trucks are equipped with an onboard computer diagnostic system that constantly monitors your vehicle’s major operating system. These systems make sure your vehicle is operating as efficiently as possible. When your vehicle does not fall within the acceptable range, your check engine light is lit to warn you that you may have a serious problem. There are many reasons that your check engine light can be on.

Postponing investigation of the check engine light may cause extensive damage to other parts of your vehicle, which will lead to greater repair expenses down the road. To save money, protect your vehicle and prevent long-term damage, the time to get your car or truck inspected is as soon as you see the check engine warning light.

Reading codes from your car’s computer system will point us in the right direction to find out what is causing the problem. If a code indicates a problem with your oxygen sensors, it doesn’t necessarilymean you need new O2 sensors. Additional diagnostics will pin point the exact cause of the error so you don’t pay for parts or services you don’t need.

What Does The Check Engine Light Monitor?

Mass Air Flow Sensor – You may not notice any drivability problems, though there may be symptoms such as a general decrease in power, poor fuel economy or sluggishness.
Incorrect Air-Fuel Mixture – An oxygen sensor detected an overly lean or rich condition. You may notice a lack of power, misfires, detonation (spark knock) or hesitations or surges in acceleration.
Cylinder Misfire – Multiple misfires in your engine could be an indicator of a serious problem. Your engine may be harder to start, idle rough or develop other driveability issues.
Engine Knock Sensor – Your vehicle’s computer constantly adjusts the engine’s timing so that it doesn’t produce harmful pre-ignition detonation or knock. You may notice drivability problems including knocks and a lack of power and hesitation.
Insufficient EGR Flow – Your vehicle re-circulates exhaust back into the combustion chamber to better achieve optimal combustion chamber temperature and to reduce emissions.
Catalytic Converters – The computer is detecting that the catalytic converters are not working as efficiently as they should be. You will likely not even notice any drivability problems though you may notice decreased fuel economy.
